For the Glory of the Empire!
No character in Mil’Averon comes from exactly the same type of background as others of his or her race & class. The events of every characters life has helped them become what they are now, for good or ill. These rules will, hopefully, help reflect that.
Region: Where your character grew up often determines what sort of things someone is expected to know. Whether a boy grows up to be a raider or a shaman, if he was born in the Viakan Hordelands, he’s expected to know how to ride a horse. Even the nobility of the former Moresian Empire know (at least, in theory) a thing or two about farming if they grew up on the Brindaryl Plains.
A small amount of free skill points in predetermined skills will be awarded to a character based off of what region he or she grew up in, as well as one background feat.
Status: How a character grew up will help determine what skills a character knows by the time they begin training to become an adventurer. As a first level adventurer, your starting skill points is cut in half, and the remaining half consists of skills and skill points from your background. Note that the backgrounds are inspired by, but not directly analogous to, the NPC classes from the DMG.
